Victorian Cottage in a Small Town

An in town site with an average size lot created great design challenges for the renovation of this turn of the century house.

The owners wanted to add a large open room but still keep within the home's Victorian roots. The wish list included all the typical amenities of a 21st century home: a larger Family Room and Dining Area on the first level, and a new Master Bathroom Suite on the second level.

The addition created a new open space which accommodated the needs of a modern family; plus a new Mud Room entry. We also reassigned new uses for the rooms in the older part of the house: a new piano room, home office and a formal living room for guests.

Taking cues from the original house for exterior materials, window sizes and roof pitches, created an addition which fools the eye. The quality of the light also improved. Windows were strategically placed to bring the most natural light to each new room. The addition transformed a smaller and darker home into a livable home for a growing family.
